York might not be famous for mountain trails, but if you love walking, you’ll find plenty worth lacing up your boots for. The city’s medieval walls offer a unique trek in themselves , a loop of just under two miles that gives you great views of the river, old rooftops, and some serious history at every step.

Step outside the city and you’re into some proper countryside. The Yorkshire Wolds Way is just a short drive away, with chalky hills and that kind of quiet calm only open fields can provide. Closer still, the Knavesmire is a massive green space right by the racecourse , perfect for a quick wander or a longer stretch if you fancy some flat, easy walking.

One thing locals don’t always shout about is the riverside trails, especially along the Ouse. Walk from Lendal Bridge down past Rowntree Park, and you’ll pass places the guidebooks usually miss. I like morning walks here , it’s peaceful and the light on the water can be stunning. Just a tip: if you want to dodge muddy patches after rain, wear boots and avoid the narrow paths next to the river. And if you’re stopping for a break, the cafes around Foss Islands offer a real treat after a good trek.
