You’ll find recommendations that make sense if you want to dodge the crowds, or embrace local life. The picks include stuff you might not spot right away, like timely events in the Museum Gardens in spring, or enjoying a quiet afternoon walk along the Ouse in early autumn. If you’re exploring the Micklegate area, try stopping by a local café we love for an honest-to-goodness proper Yorkshire brew. Our team updates the list regularly because life in York changes a bit with the seasons and as new spots pop up or long-standing favourites shift their vibe.

A Local’s Tip

One spot that many miss when visiting York is the riverside walk from Skeldergate Bridge towards Bishopthorpe. It’s peaceful and less crowded, especially in late afternoon light. Stop by the Millennium Green nearby for a quick break , locals often bring a flask and relax here after work or on weekends. If you’re here in autumn, you’ll spot the changing colours of trees including maples and oaks that frame the water beautifully. It’s a small slice of York life that feels away from the usual tourist loop but still very much part of the city’s character.
