Description
The tour departs York for a scenic drive through the Vale of York. The first stop is at the Kilburn White Horse hill figure on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, where your guide explains its carving history from 1857.
Next, you visit Helmsley, a market town with a medieval castle. Here you can explore shops or enjoy a traditional Yorkshire brew at a café.
Continuing through Hutton-le-Hole and the heart of the North York Moors, the route includes photo stops at the 16th century Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge, the highest point on the moors, and Ralph’s Cross.
In the village of Lealholm, pause for photos at the stepping-stones over the River Esk before heading to Whitby. Upon arrival, brief stops are made at the Captain Cook Statue and Whalebone Arch on West Cliff, with optional drop-offs at Whitby Harbour or Whitby Abbey to avoid climbing the 199 steps.
You then have three hours of free time in Whitby. Options include visiting The Endeavour Experience, one of two full-size replicas of the HM Bark Endeavour; the Captain Cook Museum; taking the scale replica boat trip in the harbour; or viewing Whitby Abbey, inspiration for the Dracula books. Alternatively, explore local shops, markets, or try fish and chips at the Magpie Café.
After Whitby, the tour continues to Goathland, a village known for its appearances in the Heartbeat TV series and Harry Potter films. Explore filming locations or enjoy refreshments from the village store.
The final stop is at the Hole of Horcum for views over the moors before returning to York.
