At a glance
Fossgate Tap is a bar and kitchen at 54-56 Fossgate, close to the Shambles in York. Set inside a Grade II listed building dating from the late eighteenth century, the venue retains original fixtures and fittings, giving its three floors a historic character alongside a contemporary food and drink offer.
The kitchen serves Roman-style pizza and pasta through FORO, a concept centred on traditional Roman cooking. The menu is presented as a straightforward expression of food from Rome, with the cooking led by an Italian chef whose experience includes professional kitchens in Italy and France. The result gives the venue a distinct Italian food focus within a traditional York setting.
Drinks cover craft beer, quality cask ale, cocktails and a selection of gins. Fossgate Tap also has an ongoing connection with local brewing, with beers from Brew York permanently represented among the drinks selection. The bar and kitchen format makes the venue suitable for a relaxed meal, drinks with friends or a larger social gathering.
The building contains several separate spaces for private hire and group occasions. The Gin Room is intended for smaller, more intimate gatherings, while The Attic provides a larger private area for celebrations. Other listed spaces include The Cocktail Bar, The Meeting Room and The Champagne Room. These areas can be used for occasions including birthdays, weddings and corporate meetings, with buffet and drinks packages available for private bookings.
Private event arrangements can also accommodate dietary requirements and special requests. Table bookings are available for the main venue, while the private-hire team handles arrangements for groups and events. The multi-level layout, historic setting and mix of Roman food, beer, cocktails and gin give Fossgate Tap a flexible character suited to both informal visits and organised occasions.
