Transport - Getting around the City

 

York is a very compact city and can be easily covered on foot. The majority of the centre of York is pedestrianised so walking is the easiest way to get around and visit the Tourist areas.

However please see below some further information that may be useful to you.

First Bus operates the regular bus services in and around the city. Daily and weekly tickets can be bought to save money. They can be bought in advance from Pay point outlets around York or you can pay the bus driver when you board the bus.

Park and Ride is a very good option for people who are travelling to York by car for the day.

Taxi's in York can be quite expensive so it is advisable to make sure that you check for alternatives where possible. There is a permanent taxi rank outside the Railway station and on a night only an additional rank opposite the City art Gallery.

Taxi's cannot be flagged down on the street so you must contact them for them to come and collect you. Most Hotels and Guesthouses will be happy to do this for you upon request.
