Tour Description
The Victorian Industries Tour reveals the history of York’s railway and chocolate industries and visits hidden reminders of printing, gas lighting, and flour milling. You will also hear about quirky and useful inventions originating from 19th century York. Key stops include the Railway Station area, Leetham’s Mill, Stonegate, the Minster area, and The Shambles.
The route covers approximately 2.8 km (1.75 miles) and lasts between 1 hour 30 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes. It begins at Memorial Gardens near the Railway Station and ends near The Shambles, including a short walk along city wall footpaths.
Chris Geeson, an experienced tour guide and museums’ learning facilitator, leads the tour. It is designed for school groups at KS2 or KS3 levels but can be adapted. Group sizes are ideally up to 30 pupils with accompanying adults at a ratio of 1 adult per 8 children. Youth and homeschool groups are also welcome.
