Destination Unseen is a real-world spy thriller that turns York's ancient streets, hidden snickelways, and centuries-old landmarks into the setting for your own secret mission. Part outdoor escape room, part city walk, part interactive story, it's played entirely through WhatsApp on your own phone. There's no app to download and no kit to carry.
From the moment the mission starts, your phone is your direct line to your handler, who feeds you briefings, intel, and clues as you work the case together. Decode cryptic messages, piece together evidence, follow leads down lanes most visitors walk straight past, and make choices that shape how the story unfolds. Midway through, the trail leads you into a city-centre bar where a briefcase is waiting. Open it, examine what's inside, and use the evidence to unlock the next stage of the case.
This is not a scripted tour. You and your team are the agents in charge, and if you hit a wall, a hint is only a message away, so it stays fun whether this is your first case or you're a seasoned escape-room player.
The mission works for almost any group: a different kind of date, a laugh with friends, a proper adventure for families with children aged 12 and over, or a memorable way to mark a birthday, hen do, or stag weekend. Because everything runs on your own phones, larger groups can play together as rival teams rather than being split across separate time slots, which also makes it a strong choice for corporate team building.
