Description
Clifford’s Tower is the largest surviving part of York Castle, northern England’s greatest medieval fortress. Begin your visit at the base of the mound, where a welcome area includes a tactile map of the castle and city. Take advantage of three resting places that make it easier to climb the steep steps up the mound.
Inside the tower, explore key periods of its history. Hear fictional historic characters tell the tower’s tales, from the Harrying of the North and the tragic anti-Jewish pogrom of 1190 to the fire of 1684.
For the first time in centuries, see the medieval garderobe, or toilet, built for King Henry III – the only one of its type in England. Henry’s chapel is also open after experts repaired its roof and carefully conserved its medieval stonework.
The tower’s crowning glory is the timber roof platform, giving access to 360-degree panoramas over the city of York and beyond.
