Description

Begin your day with pickup from your York hotel. Head to Knaresborough, one of Yorkshire’s most distinctive towns. Built above the River Nidd, it is famous for its dramatic railway viaduct, historic streets, castle ruins, and riverside setting. Enjoy time to explore the town and take in some of its best-known views before continuing towards a much quieter historic site. Hidden beside the river beneath Knaresborough’s cliffs is the tiny medieval Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag. Carved directly into the rock, it is one of the more unusual historic sites on the route and gives the tour a completely different atmosphere from the larger attractions. Access to the chapel itself depends on opening arrangements on the day, but the location and surrounding area can still form part of the visit. From Knaresborough, continue across Yorkshire towards Haworth, the village most closely associated with Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë. Haworth is much more than a literary stop. Its steep historic Main Street, stone buildings, independent shops, cafés, and surrounding moorland make it one of Yorkshire’s most atmospheric villages. Enjoy time to explore Haworth at a relaxed pace rather than simply arriving for a quick photograph and leaving. The Brontë Parsonage, beside St Michael and All Angels Church, was the family home of the Brontës and is at the heart of the literary story of Haworth. If you wish to visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, you may do so during the tour. Admission is optional and is not included in the tour price, allowing guests who are less interested in visiting the museum to spend their time elsewhere in Haworth. The Parsonage is normally closed on Tuesdays, so the exact experience may be adapted depending on the day of travel and current opening arrangements. The final major stop is Penistone Hill, above Haworth. This is where the landscape becomes part of the Brontë story. Open moorland, stone walls, and broad Yorkshire views give a much stronger sense of the countryside that surrounded the Brontë family and influenced their writing. The stop can be adapted according to the weather, ground conditions, and the mobility of the group. This is not a hiking tour and guests are not expected to undertake a long walk.
