York 2012 A year to Celebrate!

There can be no better time to visit York than during 2012. This year York is celebrating 800 years of local democracy. On the 9th July 1212 King John allowed the city of York to become self-governing. This important historical milestone is to be celebrated throughout York with a yearlong programme of events and activities suitable for all residents and tourists alike.

Amongst the many celebrations throughout the year, the City of York will host the Olympic Torch in and in April this year Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II is paying a visit to York to distribute the Maundy Money at a special service to be held in York Minster.

Whichever month you are planning a visit  to York there will be an event that you can join in and help us all to Celebrate York 2012
